Phytotherapy and Aromatherapy
Phytotherapy and Aromatherapy, what's the difference?
Phytotherapy is the use of medicinal plants in the form of tinctures, dry extracts, or other compositions. Herbal remedies are extremely useful in treating health disorders, acting on both physical and mental/emotional symptoms. Each herbal remedy has its own chemical composition and specific effects on the mind-body system.
Aromatherapy, on the other hand, is a very specific part of phytotherapy, in which natural essential oils are used to treat various physical, mental, and emotional health disorders. Essential oils are produced by aromatic plants and are composed of a mixture of many chemical compounds. Each chemical compound has an effect on the body, and the action of the mixture of compounds in the essential oil is what gives it its therapeutic effects.
What makes essential oil different?
While herbal remedies act pharmacologically on the body (their compounds travel to different body tissues where they perform their therapeutic function), aromatherapy products (which contain essential oils) also act through the olfactory pathway. The olfactory system (which allows us to smell) has a direct connection with important parts of the central nervous system, especially regions of the limbic system. Because of this connection, essential oils are able to influence the regulation of the entire organism through their influence on the central nervous system.

Attention: Herbal medicine and aromatherapy need to be applied correctly!
Herbal remedies are not without risks and should be used with caution and under professional supervision.
Not every scent is aromatherapy! Although synthetic fragrances often smell very similar to essential oils, they are not suitable for use in aromatherapy because they do not have the same chemical composition as essential oils. Furthermore, products that are heated can lose their therapeutic effects, which is why we don't use candles and incense in aromatherapy.

Who will guide you on this journey?

Nice to meet you, I'm Cassandra Lyra. My first training in the health field was a 2-year course in Professional Aromatherapy back in 2000. From that training, I became increasingly passionate about the health field. Today I am a physiotherapist (graduated from USP in 2007) and hold a PhD in psychology and molecular neuroscience. I specialize in behavioral neuroscience, integrative therapies, and psychophysical disorders.
I am a person who is very close to my family and friends and who loves to study and practice activities such as yoga, cycling and dancing, things that have always helped me a lot to maintain good physical and mental health in the face of life's challenges.
I strongly believe in the power of knowledge and practice combined, which is why my treatments address both practice and a touch of theory (understanding what happens in your body and mind is crucial for the evolution of your condition). Having personally experienced anxiety disorder, depression, and panic attacks, all with significant somatization, I understand very well what my patients go through and what is necessary to overcome psychophysical disorders.
